Experienced Mechanical Engineer          Product Manager          Production Manager

EXPERIENCED MECHANICAL ENGINEER (Sea-Bird Scientific; Bellevue, WA, Philomath, OR, or Halifax, NS)

OVERVIEW

This position will be located at one of Sea-Bird Scientific’s locations: Bellevue WA; Philomath OR; or Halifax NS. The purpose of this position is to apply advanced knowledge of scientific and engineering principles, with little supervision or guidance, to the design, redesign, test, modeling, and use of various products, subassemblies, complex systems, and product platforms. Mentoring and guiding junior engineers is also expected, as is the leadership of cross-functional teams. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Designs, modifies, develops, and implements electromechanical designs and assembly fixturing for production.
  • Participates in the testing process through test plan development, review, execution, and/or analysis of tests based on established specifications.
  • Actively tracks developments in the engineering technical community and incorporates them where appropriate.
  • Works with business units to evaluate and make recommendations on open innovation opportunities.
  • Drives use of common components across product platforms.
  • Coordinates across development efforts to ensure consistency and leverage of common technologies.
  • Reviews design and development efforts by other teams to ensure adherence to standards.
  • The employee and supervisor, in consultation, develop the deadlines, projects, and work to be done. 
  • The employee has responsibility for planning, designing, and carrying out programs, projects, studies, or other work independently.
  • The employee generally determines the approach to be taken and the methodology to be used. The employee keeps the supervisor and project/product managers informed of progress, potentially controversial matters, or far-reaching implications.
  • Completed work is generally reviewed only from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, or effectiveness in meeting requirements or expected results through appropriately scheduled and executed design reviews.
  • The work involves isolating and defining unknown conditions, resolving critical problems, or developing new theories. The work product or service affects the work of other experts, the development of major aspects of engineering or scientific programs or missions.

OTHER NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Mentors junior scientists and engineers.
  • Cross-Functionally competent, and can lead these activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, BACKGROUND, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • BS with a minimum of 5 to 10 years of directly relevant experience or a MS with 10 years of directly relevant experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of design for quality systems (specifically FMEA, risk reduction, design for reliability) and related requirements.
  • Detailed understanding of mechanical development methodologies for commercial products.
  • Strong background in software modeling and design.
  • Excellent knowledge of mechanical design tools required by project.
  • Demonstrated skill in the areas required to perform this job:

  • Mechanical design using CAD (Solidworks preferred).
  • Structural analysis.
  • Design for manufacturability.
  • Materials and component selection.
  • Fixturing design.
  • Active Root Cause and Countermeasure work in design.

PRODUCT MANAGER (Sea-Bird Scientific; Bellevue, WA, Philomath, OR, or Halifax, NS)

OVERVIEW

Sea-Bird Scientific has an immediate opening for a Product Manager. This position will be located at one of Sea-Bird Scientific’s locations: Bellevue WA; Philomath OR; or Halifax NS. This individual will be responsible for product management of a segment of Sea-Bird Scientific’s product families.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead Voice of Customer (VOC) plans and implementation for assigned product family.
  • Develop and maintain product roadmaps for assigned product family.
  • Lead competitive research and analysis for assigned product family.
  • Lifecycle management activities for existing products.
  • Create, validate, and test functional requirements for new products.
  • Manage idea generation, development, and launch schedule for new products.
  • Develop and maintain business cases for existing and new products, including pricing development, market evaluation and tracking, and sales performance analysis.
  • Travel to support conferences, meet with customers, and other business needs as required.

EDUCATION, BACKGROUND, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree level - B.S. or B.A. [in Physics, Engineering, Oceanography, or Optics preferable], MBA / post grad Marketing / Sales training highly desirable. M.S. or Ph.D. in Oceanographic technical discipline highly desirable.
  • 2 years previous experience in product management preferable.
  • Field experience with Oceanographic instrumentation including physical oceanographic sensors and optical sensors preferable.
  • Experience with use and design of optical instrumentation preferable.
  • Proven ability to work independently and proactively.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within a functional team with other functional groups and to adapt to new situations. Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and planning or project management skills.
  • In-depth analytical skills in gathering and interpreting data, formulating conclusions, and developing strategies and actionable conclusions based on analysis.

PRODUCTION MANAGER (Sea-Bird Electronics; Bellevue, WA)

The Production Manager reports to the Director of Operations and is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and hands-on problem solving while driving process improvements, managing personnel, and achieving both short-term and long-term objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the departments responsible for instrument manufacture (Electronic Assembly and Test, Production).
  • Manage and mentor Supervisors, Leads, and Associates, including setting department-level goals and conducting regular performance reviews.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain effective means of communicating key performance indicators.
  • Actively engage in problem solving and troubleshooting of daily issues in the Electronic Assembly & Test and Production Departments (including our Autonomous Float product line).
  • Drive process improvements to achieve goals for safety, quality, delivery (to both internal and external customers), inventory, and productivity.
  • Manage labor availability to complete work loads, and manage cross-training to increase labor flexibility.
  • Identify and recommend improvement projects.
  • Participate in and facilitate kaizen or improvement project teams, including benchmarking when necessary.
  • Interface with other Managers, particularly those managing downstream departments, to achieve common goals using shared resources.
  • Participate in Strategic Policy Deployment.
  • Participate in Manufacturing Design and/or Readiness reviews.

EDUCATION, BACKGROUND, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (physical science, engineering, etc.) preferred, or a business-related field.
  • Knowledge of quality principles and tools (problem analysis, statistical tools, experimental design, graphing tools, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of lean manufacturing principles.
  • 2-4 years of experience directly supervising non-exempt staff preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, with an emphasis on Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Electro-mechanical skills and/or familiarity with oceanographic equipment a plus.
